Materials are integral to our work. Texture adds another dimension to a piece and is as important as its form, proportions and construction. The character of the wood and the quality of its finish—whether lightly oiled, stained, brushed, cerused, reclaimed or aged—shape how a piece is seen, touched and experienced.
Our work draws on four principal material families: wood, metal, stone and fabric. In some pieces, these elements come together; in others, the character of a single material defines the design.
MATERIALS
WOOD
We work principally with oak, walnut and ash, complemented by eucalyptus, Bolívar, anegre and selected burls according to the piece or project.
Where colour is introduced, subtle stains enhance the wood’s natural grain and character. Surfaces are generally protected with a satin-matte finish, while natural oils are often used on solid oak and walnut to create a softer, more tactile appearance.
We are also increasingly adopting water-based stains and finishing systems. By reducing our reliance on solvent-based products and lowering associated emissions, these finishes offer a more responsible approach while preserving the depth, character and durability of the wood.
METALS
We work with an extensive range of metals and finishes, including bronze, bronze plating, painted metal, brass and wrought iron, selected according to the character of each piece. Their depth, patina and precision provide a refined contrast to the warmth of wood and the softness of luxurious fabrics. We continually experiment with new finishes, techniques and applications, responding to the particular challenges of each design.
STONE
We draw from a broad selection of marbles—including Carrara, Calacatta and Nero Marquina—as well as limestones and other natural stones. Used in furniture, architectural details and built-in elements such as kitchens, stone brings distinctive colour, veining and texture to combinations with wood and metal. Each project is also an opportunity to explore less familiar varieties and develop new ways of applying this versatile material.

TEXTILES
Textiles are at the heart of our upholstered furniture. Through our European production network, we work with a wide range of leading fabric houses, including Casamance, Dedar, Bisson Bruneel and Pierre Frey, with efficient access and logistics across the continent. Our Maison SBG Basics collection offers high-quality linens and linen blends in versatile neutral tones, while a significant part of our production is also made using clients’ own material (COM), supplied through our trade partners.
